The learning objectives of this course are to enable the student to analyze and apply grammar patterns corresponding to a lower-intermediate level. The classes offer the student opportunities to practice speaking, reading and writing. We continuously expand the range of vocabulary and kanji.

The end-of-course winter exam is an individual, oral exam without any study aids or preparation time. Curriculum corresponds to the entire textbook material from fall semester. Exam consists of four parts:
1. Reading aloud a text excerpt from syllabus
2. Syntactical analysis of a sentence from text excerpt (in English)
3. Talking about a the text excerpt in Japanese
4. Engaging in a dialogue with teacher about topics related to syllabus |

Course Content
|
Japanese 1 is a lower-intermediate language course with the aim of building vocabulary that goes beyond the elementary knowledge. The course offers classes in various linguistic disciplines such as grammar, reading and translation, as well as conversation and writing with the goal of strengthening the student’s ability to read and communicate in Japanese. The overall focus is topics related to Japanese culture and society. The Year 1 language courses are extremely demanding. Active involvement in class discussion and activities is expected of all participants, so students should come to class prepared to take part. We encourage you to form study groups. |

Teaching Methods
|

Teaching methods are comprised of plenary sessions, group work in ongoing dialogue with instructors, and individual writing and listening exercises. Teaching is based on textbooks as well as audio-visual input corresponding to a lower-intermediate level. The languages of instruction are: Japanese to continuously develop the student’s spoken fluency and listening comprehension, and English to assist in talking about grammar and translating texts. Active class participation as well as the submission of a number of home assignments are expected.
