Learning Objectives
At the 4th quarter exam, students should be able to:
  • Formulate, delimit and analyze a problem.
  • Demonstrate general understanding of the theories and methods relevant to the project
  • Structure the layout and present the material in a clearly formulated and accessible form in terms of both language and content.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the concepts and theories relevant to communication in organizational contexts
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of communication processes and practices in organizational settings
  • Understand, define and explain which technologies (such as hardware, software, database, and networking technologies) provide the technical foundation for information systems
  • Understand, define and explain the core information system applications used by organizations
  • Understand, define and explain how information systems are developed and managed
  • Reflect over the knowledge they acquire from the other courses, and reflect upon their own ways of producing and analyzing data
The exam in the subject consists of two parts:
1st year Project:

The oral exam is based on the 1st Year Project of max 25 pages, written in groups of 4 students.

The 4th quarter exam which weighs 25 ECTS consists of two examinations that are graded separately:

1) An oral, individual examination based on the 1st year project as such (20 ECTS) and
2) An Executive Summary (5 ECTS, see below)

The retake takes place according to the same rules as the regular examination.
However, the following supplementary examination regulations apply:
For projects, where som of the group members receive the grade 00 or below at the oral defence, these students must submit, before the retake, individual supplementary written material on aspects of the projects specified by the examiners. For guidance in this respect, the examiners will within working days of the oral examination give a written critique of the respective student performance and specify the supplementary material needed.

For projects where all members are awarded a grade of 00 or below at the oral defence, the overall project is deemed unacceptable. Before the retake the project must be revised and improved. For guidance in this respect, the examiners will give a brief written critique of the project within 8 working days of the oral examination.

2) An individual written English examination of the Executive Summary submitted individually in connection with the 1st Year Project (5 ECTS). It is a summary of the project written in a concise, precise manner to a specific target group. The Executive Summary is a 1 page independent document assessed by two internal examiners. In the Executive Summary the student must demonstrate:
  • The ability to formulate and present a summary of their project in a concise, precise manner to a specific targit group.
  • An adequate level of written English that does not constitute a barrier to communication and does not contain significant lexical or grammatical errors.
The retake for students who did not pass the ordinary exam consists in handing in a revised and improved executive summary.

Course Content

The aims of the 1st Year Project are:


· To facilitate and reinforce the learning of the subjects taught during the 1st year by encouraging students to work independently and in a focused manner with selected theories.

· To develop analytical skills needed to undertake problem-oriented project work. The problem-oriented process during project work is shaped by the systematic, professional and scientific demands of academic knowledge production.


The 1st Year Project is the first major independent work in the BA programme. As stated above, emphasis is therefore on learning the craft of project work: how to handle academic concepts and analysis, how to structure the work process and how to present findings in a project report. This is done through problem-oriented project work, in which the project group is the most important learning unit.
The overall theme of the 1st Year Project is: Communication in Organisations.
The project must focus on a concrete communication problem and have a special focus on the theoretical framework of communication studies.
The project must use the theoretical, methodological and empirical aspects presented in Fundamentals of Communication, Introduction to Organizational Communication, Fundamentals of Information Systems and Interdisciplinary Research Methods.

Teaching Methods
The project process includes 3 project workshops and some IRM workshops, which share the aim of preparing students for the 1st Year Project and guiding them in the project process.
Before project work begins, the Study Board annually prepares a manual that states the thematic framework, submission deadling and other conditions concerning project work process and organization.
