Learning Objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce the concept of ‘popular culture’, relate it to other forms of artistic and aesthetic production and analyze how different forms of art and popular culture can be perceived as expressions of identities and forms of consciousness. Furthermore, the purpose of the course is to introduce a number of genres and forms of expression that serve or have served as expressions of national, regional, ethnic or racial identities in the western hemisphere.

Individual home assignment. Topic and problem must be approved by the teacher at the end of the semester. After this, the student has two weeks to write the paper. Length: A maximum of 5 standard pages Deadline: See exam plan. The paper is handed in, in three copies, at the BA secretariat office.
The exam counts for 3.75 ECTS.

As the regular exam.Deadline for topic approval and handing in will be posted in the exam plan.

The holding of the exam

The exam is held immediately after the ordinary exam period. After that, the exam cannot be taken until the next ordinary exam of this course.

Examination
At the exam, the student must be able to:

• Define the concept ‘popular culture’ and delimit it in relation to other aesthetic and artistic forms.
• Identify various forms of expression and genres within popular culture
• Relate the concept to social identities and forms of consciousness
• Identify and formulate a problem within popular culture based on a selected, concrete form of expression or empirical case
• Analyze and discuss important elements of expression and content in the selected case
• Point out a relationship between expression/content and social identities within the selected case
• Identify - and participate in a discussion about – significant similarities and differences between the selected case and other genres or expressions of popular culture
• Point out similarities and differences between popular culture in different nations or regions within the western hemisphere
Course Content

The course includes an introduction to the concept of popular culture, which at the same time is related to other forms of artistic and aesthetic production. Theoretical approaches to and discussions of the concept are included to a certain extent. The main content of the course will be a study of a number of specific themes, including analyses of how concrete forms of aesthetic expression – such as film, TV, music and literature – are created in specific social and cultural contexts.

Teaching Methods
Class teaching, student presentations and group work. Net-based teaching is used to the greatest extent possible.
