Learning objectives
At the end of the course the students should be able:
Content:
• To identify a relevant topic based on the themes and concepts in the curriculum, and to construct links between their chosen topic and the other concepts and themes learned.
• To show a clear understanding of economic institutions and actors in the regions studied, and their implications for competitiveness based on the concepts and themes in the curriculum.
Language:
• To present the exam topic in French using an appropriate vocabulary;
• To explain and discuss viewpoints on the chosen topic giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options;
• To comprehend the questions posed during the examination and communicate in coherent French so that their responses flow and are intelligible;
• To interact with a degree and fluency and spontaneity;
• To speak grammatically correct and well-pronounced French, that is, avoiding major grammatical, lexical, idiomatic or pronunciation errors that inhibit communication. At this stage, students should be able to show their linguistic awareness by correcting errors in the exam situation.
Examination
The exam in the subject consists of two parts:

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

Description of the exam procedure
  • Individual oral exam where the student is tested in material from the entire 3rd semester (though it is assumed that students have mastered the content from the first year French studies course).
  • Students will write a 1-standard page paper on a topic of their choosing, which is used as the point of departure for a presentation and discussion.
  • One grade is given for content (according to the 7-point grading scale - weighs 0.5 towards the grade point average) and students receive a pass/fail assessment in terms of language.
  • Overall assessment of oral performance.

The content must be passed before the examination on the language.

The exam is held in two steps:

Midterm: At the end of the 3rd semester, individual oral examination.

Final exam: Upon return from the exchange semester, individual oral examination

Description of the exam procedure

  • The student’s language proficiency is graded according to the 7-point grading scale. Overall assessment of oral performance.
  • The grade weighs 0.5 towards the grade point average.
  • Students will write a 1-standard page paper on a topic of their choosing from one of their electives, which is used as the point of departure for a presentation and discussion.
Course content and structure

The overall aim of these courses is to deepen the students’ knowledge of the economic, political and socio-cultural context in French-speaking parts of the world, and to strengthen their communicative skills in their chosen language. The specific aim of the course is to develop students’ understanding of globalisation and internationalisation processes and their manifestations in and impact upon national and regional contexts.

The course is built up around two dimensions: content and language. The overall aim is to deepen students’ knowledge and understanding of economic institutions, organisations, actors in selected Francophone parts of the world and to strengthen their communicative skills.
 

The specific aim of the course is to develop students’ understanding of the relationship between economic institutions and actors, and their implications for competitiveness.

Topics include key sectors, public-private division, business cultures, management educations and fashions and CSR in selected French speaking countries. What links these cases is that they illustrate different conceptions of how to do business and of the role of business in society.


The language dimension is aimed at improving students’ grammar skills, pronunciation and fluency; and their reading and oral comprehension. Emphasis will also be placed on how to write short papers of the type that the two oral exams will be based on.

Teaching methods
Class teaching involving lectures, student presentations, group work, exercises and discussion. All teaching will take place in French and all reading will also be in the language.
