  • Understand and present key models from international economics and trade theory. The student must thus be able to set up a relevant economic model describing a given situation, solve numerical problems based on a given model, provide a graphical analysis of a given solution, and provide verbal economic intuition for the results.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental theories and frameworks from the field of international business. The student must thus be able to account for the content, economic foundations, empirical implications, and practical relevance of those theories.
  • Apply the relevant theories, models, and methods to industry- and firm-specific managerial issues, where the student is expected to be able to relate the economic models and theoretical frameworks to concrete cases.

Course content and structure

The globalization of the World economy has led to an increased international mobility of goods, capital, and labor, presenting multinational as well as domestic companies with new challenges and opportunities. This course focuses on these challenges and opportunities. The students must become familiar with and master the analytic tools and models that make them able to exploit the insights of International Economics and International Business when working with managerial issues faced by firms in the global economy. The course gives the students a solid theoretical knowledge base, but the focus will be on the way in which this insight is applied to real-world problems.

The course is built on two integrated perspectives which are introduced in parallel. One perspective is based on models in international economics and trade theory, while the other perspective is based on international business theory. The students will learn how to combine the insights from these two perspectives and apply them to cases describing real industries and firms.
