Course content and structure
Tourism is one of the most important and fastest growing sectors on global economy, accounting for one in twelve jobs available worldwide. One important condition for the long term vitality of tourism businesses is finding ways of responding to increasing pressures generated by societal concerns for sustainable development.

This course has two main objectives: to introduce students to the complex field of sustainable development in tourism, and to train their problem-solving abilities within the subjects taught during the course. Using a combination of theoretical knowledge and real-life examples, the course discusses tools and policies that are used by tourism stakeholders to reduce negative impacts and play a more responsible role in the society. The course covers three main areas of study: governance for sustainable development in tourism destinations, corporate competitiveness through sustainable strategies and managerial perspectives on sustainable supply chains.

The course’s development of personal competences:
Through its learning activities and assessment, the course is designed:
·         To provide students with theoretical and research knowledge about sustainable development in tourism through class activities, group work and individual study;
·         To train students’ communication skills by engaging them in oral and written presentations;
·         To strengthen students’ problem-solving skills by applying theoretical knowledge to specific tourism problems;
·         To develop students’ understanding of the relevance of sustainable development for domestic and international tourism.
Teaching methods
The teaching is based on lectures giving overview of the theory, individual study and group work, guest lecturers from the industry, and student presentations and discussant’s critique supervised by faculty.
