In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

Description of the exam procedure
The 2.5 ECTS do not count as seperate  exam ECTS . The course has no independent exam, but is examined as part of the 2nd Year Project.  

This class is a prerequisite for registering for the 2nd Year Project examination.
In order to pass this class, 2 written individual assignments have to be submitted by the set deadlines. The assignments are not graded but have to be approved by the teacher. Any assignment, that is not approved, has to be rewritten according to the given feedback and submitted by a deadline set by the teacher.
Course content and structure
The course revisits the foundations of scientific knowledge creation to explore basic notions, concepts and ideas in more depth as well as to further develop competencies of analytical thinking and coherent argumentation according to the conventions of scientific research. Against this backdrop, the course explores the basic choices and their consequences every researcher has to face in order to be able to establish a research rationale logically linking epistemological concepts with methodological considerations and research design.

This course should be seen as an introductory class to the practical workshops on qualitative methodology accompanying the work for the 2nd Year Project. Please, see the course description for BA-2YP for further information.
Teaching methods
Based on the principles of student-centred learning, the learning methods will be a mix of interactive lectures, thought experiments, practical exercises as well as group and class discussions.
