Description of the exam
procedure
The examination consists of an individually written essay
(max. 10 standard pages, English language) in which the
students will answer a set of questions. In their answers the
students will have to demonstrate their understanding of
the broad spectrum of information systems and information systems
development topics and apply these to the context
of their specific project work. The students will have 14 days to
write their essays and can use all available materials.
Internal exam with 1 examiner.

Course content and
structure |
The course provides a comprehensive
introduction to the technology, development and management of
business information systems. The course assumes no prior knowledge
of IS or IT. The new concepts and terms are defined as clearly as
possible, with comprehensive explanations. In this fast-moving
area, the course covers both the crucial underpinnings of the
subject as well as the most recent business and technology
applications. The course covers the following subjects:
1. INTRODUCTION: Basic concepts, Enterprise and functional
business information systems
2. Hardware and Software
3. Networks, telecommunications and the Internet
4. IS DEVELOPMENT: Acquiring and developing information systems
5. Initiating systems development
6. Information systems project management
7. Systems analysis
8. Systems design
9. System build, implementation, maintenance
10. IS MANAGEMENT: Information systems strategy
11. Information systems management
12. Providing end-user services and service management
13. Managing information security
14. Ethical, legal and moral constraints on information systems

Teaching methods |
The course will be taught as a set of
14 double lectures. The theoretical and conceptual contents will be
supplemented with:
• a group project work where students build initiate, design and
build an information system (a website) in several stages
• selected additional practical exercises to re-enforce theoretical
concepts
• international case studies from a wide variety of sectors
• self-assessment exercises, essay and discussion questions to
engage the students and encourage critical thinking and
reflection
• online supporting resources including web links, and extra cases
for reinforcement and revision
Use of e-learning:
The course will be taught face-to-face, but the students are
encouraged to use the above described online resources |
