| Learning objectives |
At the end of the course participants should:
- A. Content
- Be able to describe and evaluate the dynamics of China’s
economic development in Chinese
- - Based on discussed theories be able to evaluate the
transformation ocess that has taken place in China.
- Be able to evaluate specific Chinese business practices in a
historical, cultural as well as globalized context.
- B. Communicative competence
- Be familiar with discussed term and concepts in Chinese.
- Be able to present the main content of the assigned Chinese
texts in Chinese.
- Be able to discuss the Chinese texts in Chinese
freely

| Course prerequisites |
| Students must document Chinese language
qualifications as well as general knowledge of China and Chinese
culture and societies on a level equivalent to the BSc degree in
Business Administration and Chinese at the Asian Studies Programme.
The course is also of benefit to Chinese natives and others fluent
in Chinese who take interest in the course content |

The exam in the subject consists of two parts:

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product
must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The
grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and
the individual oral performance. | | Individual or group exam | Individual | | This course has only one exam, and it consists of
two part: 50 % language and 50 % content.
This grade is given for the students' language
skills. | | Size of written product | Max. 1 page | | Assignment type | Synopsis | | Duration | Written product to be submitted on specified date and

procedure
The students will write a one page
synopsis in Chinese that serves as the launch pad for a discussion
in Chinese of the course literature. The examination will take 30
minutes (evaluation included). Students receive one grade that is
determined by the content of his/her performance at the exam, and
another that reflects his/her communicative skills in
Chinese |

| Course content and structure |
|
The course focuses on state-business relations as well as
business development seen from a governance perspective.
China has built up a strong economy through various
governance forms such state-owned, private-owned and foreign-owned
enterprises. China’s has responded to the international pressure
and challenges by engaging in a process of creating new a
institutional setup while modernizing and restructuring the
remaining organizational system and allowing a plethora of social
organizations and associations to develop. The course will explore
how China has managed its transformation from a closed planned
economy to an international competitive global economy without
undergoing a “big-bang” transformation like the former Soviet
Union. The gradualist approach deeply based in Chinese cultural
values has informed both the political and managerial development
in China.

| Teaching methods |
| Classroom teaching and discussions based on
readings. The students are expected to participate actively in the
classroom and take turns making presentions that sum up and discuss
the issues in the readings. Finally, students must display an
ability to gather literature in addition to the course
material. |
