Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors: Through the exam the student should demonstrate that s/he:
  • Can give a rehearsed presentation on a specific topic concerning culture, society and/or economy using appropriate vocabulary.
  • Can make an oral presentation in which her/his viewpoint is clearly stated and put into a broader context
  • Can debate and sustain a dialogue on topics from syllabus
  • Can communicate without major grammatical, lexical, idiomatic or pronunciation errors.
  • Can auto-correct errors while speaking.

Number of mandatory activities: 2
Requirements about active class participation (assessed approved/not approved)
2 in-class oral presentations per student either individually or in groups.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

Description of the exam procedure

2-3 weeks before the exam, the students must submit the synopsis as a PPT-presentation (max. 10 slides) that serves as a basis for the oral exam, which consists of the following 2 parts:
 

  1. Oral presentation of the PPT (5-7 minutes)
  2. A discussion in Japanese with the examiner. The discussion will be based on the PPT-presentation and then evolve into a general discussion about other topics from syllabus.
Course content and structure

The focus of teaching is to enable the students to communicate in intermediate Japanese. The texts will deal with socioeconomic topics. The course will strengthen vocabulary, textual comprehension as well as spoken competence. Through the class activities, the students will practice their oral presentational skills on topics related to sylabus.

 

Grading is based on a holistic assessment of both parts.

Teaching methods
Teaching is student-centered with an emphasis on pair work guided by cooperative learning principles that aim at engaging each student to a maximum extent. The languages of instruction are Japanese and English. Active involvement in group discussion and contribution to class activities are expected of all participants.
