Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors: After having followed the course the student should be able to:
  • Assess strengths and weaknesses of various qualitative methods in relation to a given research problem.
  • Formulate and operationalize a research problem that is suitable for investigation by means of qualitative methods, and account for the relation between theory and methods in the process.
  • Discuss when and why it is relevant to use qualitative methods in the analysis of business organizations, political institutions and their environments.
  • Demonstrate applied skills with qualitative data collection, analysis and reporting.
  • Critically reflect on how to analyze and report qualitative data as well as the notions of validity and reliability.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

Description of the exam procedure

Course coordinator has ideas about holding the oral exam as workshops. It is not clear yet how this should be arranged. It may not be possible.

Course content and structure

This course provides the students with an understanding of how to conduct, analyze and report qualitative research in the context of economic and political organizations. The course introduces qualitative case study designs and focuses on how to produce, analyze and write up qualitative research knowledge by way of three methodologies: Discourse Analysis, Interview Methods and Observation Techniques. ……The course is based on a set of exercise assignments to provide the students with a practical feel for using qualitative methodologies as the empirical data source. Teaching methods
The course will be based on lectures, group and plenary discussions and exercises. Practical hands-on experience through student exercises and active involvement in class activities will be the key way for students to acquire the skills outlined in the learning objectives.
