Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors: At the written exam the student should demonstrate that s/he:
  • Can provide an accurate English translation of a written Chinese text with regard to syntax, genre, audience and function (providing explanatory footnotes when deviating considerably from the original syntax).
  • Can make a syntax analysis down to word level, identify the different sentence elements and define their mutual function in the sentence
  • Can write with a minimal competence on the rhetorical and syntactical level. This requirement can be met by submitting 2 smaller compositions during the course
Prerequisites for registering for the exam
Number of mandatory activities: 2
Compulsory assignments (assessed approved/not approved)
Submission of 2 small compositions in Chinese on CBSLearn during the semester according to announced deadlines. Both assignments must be deemed approved by the instructor.
In case the student does not fulfill the requirement of having submitted the 2 mandatory written compositions during the course, s/he must deliver and have approved an essay of min 350 characters before the exam.

If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.
Description of the exam procedure

The exam is based on an unknown text. Dictionaries (in the form of books and wordtanks like an electronic dictionary (for instance Besta) with no internet access) and grammar handbooks are allowed.

The exam consists of the following parts:

  1. Translation from Chinese into English
  2. Grammatical analysis of a sentence from the exam text

 

The grade is based on a holistic assessment.

Course content and structure

The focus of teaching is applied language use to enable the students to communicate in lower intermediate Chinese about general topics related to culture and society. We continue to work with translation as a tool to ensure reading comprehension, and continue to expand the range of vocabulary and Chinese characters even further.

The course consists of 3 interrelated classes:
1) translation and grammar
2) written exercises
3) speaking classes


Chinese 2 is a lower-intermediate language course that builds upon the knowledge acquired from Chinese 1 while gradually increasing the level of difficulty. 

Teaching methods
Teaching methods involve pair/ group work monitored by the instructor, and individual writing and listening exercises. Learning is based on cooperative learning principles which are designed to facilitate equal participation and simultaneous interaction to ensure each student's maximum output during class time. Teaching methods also involve e-tivities (online activities) to support the development of translation skills.

Teaching is based on textbooks as well as audio input corresponding to an intermediate level. The languages of instruction are Chinese to continuously stimulate and develop spoken fluency and listening comprehension, and English to talk about grammar and to translate texts.
