Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors:
  • Be able to understand the relationship between the different phases of the innovation process
  • Be able to acquire fundamental concepts and tools in the area of management innovation
  • Be able to identify, analyze and explain how technological innovation transforms well established business models
  • Be able to understand and analyze how the digitalization changes business an innovation processes
  • Be able to understand the transformation from product based innovation to platform based innovation
  • Be able to identify, position and evaluate a business opportunity
  • Be able to evaluate a business opportunity through theory-based critical assessment and discuss the results including how to mitigate the prevailing challenges as well as how to move ahead with the development of the underlying innovation

Course content and structure

Innovation has become an increasingly crucial ingredient in value generation and development of organizations and the human enterprise at large. Nowadays, IT-driven innovation plays a pivotal role in transforming organizations as well as industries. Business models and best practices that were established over the past 100 years have become obsolete because IT changes the playing field and the rules of engagement in most business sectors. Just consider what Skype has done to the telecommunication sector or how the Internet is changing the newspaper market. While advertisers prefer to use their marketing resources on Internet advertising, businesses are still struggling with how to react to social media: is it a threat or an opportunity? How "free" services can become a basis for sustainable business models? Moreover, advances in mobile and wireless technologies are about to transform the business landscape once again. Participants in the this course will gain a thorough understanding of how these developments influence businesses and the competitive landscape while also getting the latest tools and techniques for managing business innovation. Overall, the course provides a balanced mix of formal theory, critical thinking, and hands-on experience.

Teaching methods
Seminar: lectures, case discussions, mini workshops, guest lectures and class presentations. The class meetings are interactive and require ongoing engagement of the students. The interactive nature of the course limits the class size and requires attendance in order to acquire successfully the learning objectives.
