Learning objectives
The student must document:
  • that he/she has insight in the basic textual concepts introduced during the course and is able to apply them in the analysis of a text
  • that he/she is able to produce a written text product in English which adequately meets the conventions of the given text genre
  • that he/she is able to account for the strategies chosen in the product on the basis of the theories and methods relating to the course
Prerequisite
Basic grammar insight (e.g. sentence analysis) is desirable, but not a requirement.

Course content

The overall goal of the course is to give the student insight in the basic elements and concepts that are necessary to understand, interpret, produce and communicate various types of rofessional texts. This goal is achieved as follows:

• The student will acquire theoretical knowledge of the overall characteristics of texts.
• The student will master methods for identifying the genre and purpose of a professional text on the basis of a number of parameters for analysis (e.g. structure, appeal forms, speech acts, stylistic features and lexical choices).
• The student will be able to make grammatical and linguistic observations at sentence level and include them in the analysis and production of texts.
• The student will be able to apply the theories and methods of the course in his/her own text production.
Teaching methods
The course is a combination of class teaching, discussions of texts and exercises prepared at home and written assignments produced individually or in groups. Workshops may be included.
