Learning objectives
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
  • Solve real-world problems and cases using the tools and theoretical concepts from basic corporate finance
  • Explain alternative approaches that can be used to solve these problems and cases
  • Discuss advantages and disadvantages of such approaches and how the choice among these might influence the solution to the problem
  • Relate the choice between various approaches to theoretical and empirical findings in corporate finance

Examination
48 hours before the exam, case material for the exam will be distributed. No internet access allowed during the 4 hour written examination.

The make-up and re-examination will be an individual 20 minutes oral examination.
Prerequisites for attending the exam
A case solved and presented in class in groups with a maximum of 4 students is a prerequisite for attending the examination. The group presentation of the solution to the case will be assessed by the teacher of the course with pass/fail.

The make-up and re-examination will be an individual 4 pages home assigment of a similar case. The written assignment must be assessed by the teacher of the course with pass/fail prior to the regular examination.
Course content
This course is focusing on the real-world applications of the tools and concepts of modern corporate finance in actual financial decisions for various types of corporations. This is primarily done by case analysis. However, the lectures will also briefly review the essential theory and important tools as well as discuss alternative and more advanced extensions of these tools. Among the topics covered are investment decisions including real options theory, capital structure, valuation, payout policy, risk management, executive compensation, and mergers and acquisitions.
Teaching methods
The class hours will be used for lectures, smaller exercises, and case presentations/discussions. In addition, relevant guest speakers will be used.

The literature will consist of:
-     References to chapters in a standard corporate finance textbook like Brealey, Myers and Marcus, Fundamentals of Corporate Finance
