Learning Objectives:
In completing the course the students will be able to:
  • ・ Describe the different types of organizational cultures and management fashions offered in the curriculum.
  • ・ Evaluate the differences in Scandinavian organisational culture and management practice in relation to Japanese management practice.
  • ・ Describe and evaluate the effects of organisational culture and management strategies on performance.
  • ・ Compare the different organisational culture and management theories. Define their assets and shortcomings.
  • Concerning Japanese language competence students will be able to:
  • ・ Respond to the examiner’s questions and engage in dialogues about curriculum issues at a high level of fluency.
  • ・ Display proficiency by using correct grammar, management terminology and proper levels of politeness in situ.
  • ・ Argue in a coherent and understandable manner without inhibiting language mistakes.
  • ・ Pronounce Japanese words without inhibiting errors. And in the instance of the exam be able to make self-corrections during conversation.
Course prerequisites
Students must document Japanese language qualifications as well as general knowledge of Japanese and Japanese culture and societies on a level equivalent to the BSc degree in Business Administration and Japanese at the Asian Studies Programme. The course is also of benefit to Japanese natives and others fluent in Japanese who take interest in organization and management issues in a Japanese context.
Organizing and Managing in Regional Context – Japanese:

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

Description of the exam procedure
The examination is oral and done individually. Based on the syllabus, the student is required to prepare a synopsis written in Japanese (800-1000 characters) aimed at clarifying a problem. The synopsis is handed in two weeks before exam. The examination takes its departure from this problem, beginning with a presentation by the student and followed by an open discussion on the topic as well as other relevant topics covered in class.
A time of 30 minutes is set aside for examining each student (incl. deliberation), of which 5-10 minutes is allowed for the student presentation. Students receive two grades: one grade that is determined by the content of his/her performance at the exam, and another that reflects his/her communicative skills in Japanese.
Course content and structure
The aim of this course is two-fold. On the one hand it will build up students’ oral communicative skills in Japanese, with a specific view to enabling students to take part in discussions and do presentations about organizational and management issues in company and academic settings. On the other hand it will provide students with knowledge about organisation and management issues in Japan, including about Japanese and foreign corporations doing business in Japan.

The course takes its point of departure in theoretical and practical questions concerning organisational culture and management issues related to Japan. We will discuss several management fashions. These fashions include corporate and personal branding, knowledge management, mentoring and other forms of people management. It is clear that most of these fashions are implemented differently and with different rates of success in Scandinavian and Japanese companies. The focus of the course is to discuss how are they are implemented and operationalized in practice - and why outcomes may differ? Each session revolves around a core management fashion theme. During the course students will be able to draw on their knowledge from core courses in business and management to discuss management issues in a Japanese context.
Teaching methods
The course is a combination of classroom teaching and discussions based on the compendium material. Student presentations are planned to engage and enhance information exchange. Students are expected to contribute creatively and actively in the classroom and to present the issues in mainly verbal but also written presentations. These includes preparing power point presentations (using Japanese word processing) and to make resumes about the core management themes. Students will be asked in turn to present their interpretation of themes in the compendium and the company profiles for discussion in class.
