The exam consists of 4 parts:

  1. Dictation using the characters studied during the semester
  2. Reading aloud and translating a text excerpt from the syllabus
  3. Grammatical questions
  4. Conversation in Japanese.

The grade is based on an overall assessment of all 4 disciplines.

Course content and structure

This course provides knowledge of the basic elements of the modern Japanese language with regard to syntax, grammar, and colloquial/formal speech. The course will help the student to build basic vocabulary and communicate in basic everyday Japanese.

The course offers classes in various linguistic disciplines such as grammar, speaking, listening, writing, reading comprehension through translation into English. Our didactics evolve around the functional approach to language teaching and learning which sees language as a means to communication.

Teaching is based on the revised Genki textbook system with text- and workbooks. Each textbook includes an audio cd enabling the student to practice listening exercises pertaining to each chapter at his/her own pace.

Teaching methods
Teaching methods combine lectures with group work guided by cooperative learning principles that engage each student to a maximum extend. The language of instruction is English for grammar and text comprehension, while many of the speaking, writing and listening classes will use primarily Japanese.

The introductory course is a demanding full-time study. Active class participation and involvement is expected.

Students will be asked to work in groups and pairs, and we encourage that students form smaller study groups in preparing for the classes.
Student workload
Teaching 180 hours
Preparation 640 hours
Examination 3 hours
