Learning objectives |
To achieve the grade 12, students
should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor
mistakes or errors: After having completed the full year course the
student :
- Can translate texts of the same level as the curriculum from
Chinese into English
- Can correctly read, write, and understand the characters from
the curriculum
- Can construct simple sentences applying correct grammar and
actively use vocabulary from curriculum
- Can engage in basic dialogue coping with straightforward
questions related to familiar topics
- Can pronounce without errors impairing the
intelligibility

procedure
The mid-term exam consists of a number of tasks resembling
the ones from text- and workbooks, i.e. recognition and production
of Chinese characters, applied grammar, translation, composition
writing etc. The test entails knowledge of vocabulary and grammar
learned so far.
The curriculum corresponds to the studied chapters in Practical
Chinese Reader, Vol.3. The exam is hand-written |

The end-of-course summer exam consists of the following 4
elements: - Reading aloud
- Translating into English
- Answer grammatical questions
- Conversing in Chinese
The curriculum corresponds to New Practical Chinese
Reader, Vol 3. The grade is based on a holistic assessment of all 4
elements. |

Course content and
structure |
This course is part of the propaedeutic year at ASP.
An intensive course that provides knowledge of the basic
elements with regards to syntax, grammar, and colloquial speech.
The course will help the student build a basic vocabulary enabling
him/her to communicate in basic everyday Chinese.
The course offers classes in various linguistic disciplines such as
grammar, speaking, listening, writing, reading, and will give the
student solidt prerequisites to start Year 1 at ASP. Teaching
is based on textbooks corresponding to a
beginner's level.

Teaching methods |
Teaching methods combine lectures and
group/pair work guided by cooperative learning principles that
engage each student to a maximum extent.
The language of instruction is English for grammar and text
comprehension while many of the speaking and writing cases will be
conducted primarily in Chinese for the sake of maximum exposure to
and interaction in the language.
The introductory course is a demanding full-time study. Active
class participation is expected. We encourage the students to form
small study groups. |

Further Information |
This course is part of the propaedeutic year at ASP. Both
Chinese Intro 1 & Chinese Intro 2 must be passed before
matriculation to Year 1 at ASP.
