Learning objectives
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors: At the exam students should as for this course:
  • Be able to explain the concepts as presented in the curriculum, their inter-dependence and their significance to an empirical case
  • Be able to produce an empirical case. The case must be informed by theory, and it must be sufficiently complex to demonstrate the student’s empirical and theoretical points
  • Be able to relate content of information with users' needs in an organizational context, and explain their interdependencies by means of the analysis of the collected empirical data
  • Be able to reflect on theories in relation to the information management field.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

Description of the exam procedure

This exam covers the course  "Information Management and Organizational Change".
It is an oral exam in curriculum based on the project paper written in groups. One grade is given, reflecting an overall assessment of the paper and the oral examination.
1 internal examiner and 1 second internal examiner.

Course content and structure

This course addresses the fundamental challenge of information management: how can information be managed to create value and contribute to organizational goals.The course develops a coherent theoretical framework for working with information management, considering information management as a field, a framework, and a concept.

 

The course places the concept of information management in the context of organizational development. Organizations are open systems that exist in and interact with the environment. Intelligent organizations are distinguished by the ability to read the environment and to adapt accordingly.

 

Thus, the basic goal of information management is to harness the organization’s information resources and information capabilities to enable it to learn and adapt to its changing environment. The information management lifecycle: Information creation, acquisition, storage, analysis, and use therefore provides the intellectual latticework that supports the growth and development of the intelligent organization.

Teaching methods
Thematic lectures and supervision that develop the role of information management issues in relation to organizational goals and strategies, information ecologies and information culture. Students will learn to work methodically with, and critically reflect on, information management practice in organizations, as well as the interdependencies of information value, organizational context, and users' information needs.

Throughout the course, students are encouraged to apply the concepts, models and tools presented to real corporate settings and experiences.

Students must develop a specific case relating to an organizational change process involving a specific information management process, and/or information product in a specific organization according to key issues dealt with in the course literature.
