To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors: At the end of the course students should be able to:
  • Describe, compare, and discuss central ideas from the history of Western social sciences, political theory, and ideology.

If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.
Course content and structure

The course presents and discusses central thinkers in the history of Western social sciences, political theory, and ideology. It covers normative and analytical or theoretical ideas about individuals, society, economy, government, and the state from antiquity to the contemporary world. Focus is on the origins of contemporary political ideas and on the trajectories of the specialized modern social sciences with a special emphasis on the evolution of, and the disciplinary divisions between, sociology, political economy, economics and political science.
