Mentoring programmes and coaching initiatives are today an integrated part of developing managers and employees in most organizations. Managers are trained in coaching to become better at supporting and developing their employees. Mentoring programmes are established to develop talents, trainees, managers, expats/ethnic minorities, new employees etc. And the market for mentoring and coaching is going through a professionalization where both managers, HR and external consultants have a better understanding of what mentoring and coaching is and can do. This course will give you the opportunity to better understand the organizational context and know when and how mentoring and coaching can make a significant contribution to organizational success.
During this course, we will seek to define and understand the fundamental concepts of mentoring and coaching. We will explore the theoretical and practical approaches, gain insight into why and how organizations are using mentoring and coaching, explore the complexity of mentoring and coaching in organizations, look at the roles of managers and HR and – through cases – gain more insight into challenges, pitfalls, barriers and dilemmas.
We will have a special focus on understanding individual and organizational learning processes. Therefore, we will explore individual coaching/mentoring conversations to experience the individual learning process and look at specific cases of organizational programmes to understand the organizational learning process. This will give us the opportunity to understand how “the organization” influences the learning process, and how the learning processes of mentoring and coaching can contribute to achieving strategic, business goals of the organization.
