Description of the exam procedure

The purpose is to write a report, which reflects your internship experiences based on one or more theories and / or concepts from the previous classes in the BSc International Shipping and Trade program.

The maximum number of pages is 20 per student and in order to help you with the content of the report I suggest the following structure:

Motivation

App. two pages when describe briefly your company, internship, tasks and which concepts and/or theories you have chosen. Motivate this choice and it can be done in two ways: empirical and theoretic

RQ

The most important is to keep in mind that the internship report in problem-based. Think carefully about how you can phrase the Research Questions (RQs). I suggest that the first question is descriptive in nature and concerns and overview of your relevant experiences (relevant to the following analytical why question). That leads to a division between a initial descriptive question, followed by an analytical question based on a “why” question.

Key-words (definitions based on RQ)

The next section concerns the definition of the key words in the RQ. In this section you can provide an overview of the theories and or concepts which you have decided to use including a discussion of the background and scientific setting of the concept / theory.

Section based on RQ1: Your experiences

App. 5 pages description of your experiences. This empirical section is the foundation for the following

Section based on RQ2: The Analysis

Remember that the analysis is the section based on the why question and it can build on the insights of the descriptive question.

Conclusion

Important here to answer your research questions.

Course content and structure

Progression through the two internships
The two internships will train the student in the role of "reflective interns". This means that on one hand they will participate in the business related issues and on the other hand reflect upon the concrete organizational, professional, theoretic and personal opportunities and conditions for the problem solving. The internships will provide the students with a strong professional foundation and network upon which they can build the further carrier and personal development.

The course of internship consists of two internships preferably in the same company, which will permit the students to gradually develop an understanding of the different aspect of the shipping company. Each internship will have a main focus, which will ensure a progressivity during both internships.

Internship I: Holistic Knowledge and specialize skills
The purpose of the first 4 months of internship is to introduce the student to the daily life of a relevant maritime company. The students has just finished courses as "Operations and Logistics Management", "Risk Management" and "Trade Finance" and thus the main focus is that the student learn how all these different aspects are a part of the bigger picture in the company. The student must gain a holistic perspective of the company and how the theories learned at CBS might be applied. It is during this internship that the student first must experience the limit of theoretical works on practical issues, within one or two different departments. The students will after 4 months be capable of applying the relevant theories from the bachelor program in a practical context. The student must demonstrate a problem-oriented mindset in order to identify the challenges in a shipping company.

The second part of the internship will bring the student deeper into the company and the students will be introduced to all departments in order to by the end of the internship to express interest in a specific department. The students will develop some specialized skills which permit more responsibility and challenging assignments. The student must participate in a more proactive way in the daily life and be able to argument for selection of theories, emperics, methods, conclusion and recommendation in assignments. To have a clear structure for an analysis and understanding of the strength and weaknesses is a skill the student will acquire during this internship. The first internship was more about how to apply theories where the second is more about which and why.
