Learning objectives |
To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the
following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or
errors:
- Demonstrate ability to analyze business economic issues
relevant to innovative firms
- Demonstrate knowledge of consequences of IPR and collaboration
modes for innovation
- Apply knowledge of innovation and digital transformation in
practice

Description of the exam
procedure
The exam will consist of approximately 4-6 questions addressing
the topics discussed in class. Focus will be on analyzing selected
business cases using the theories taught in the course as point of
departure for an analysis and discussion. The questions will each
target one or a few topics and theories, and will not require
integration of all of the course topics into one answer. You will
be assessed based on your ability to clearly communicate
understanding of theory and case, as well as ability to analyze and
discuss the exam questions. To do this may require you to recall
theories and concepts discussed in the readings and in class and
briefly describe these before engaging in the analysis and
discussion. The exam questions will be similar to (though not
identical to) the questions used in the weekly
assignments.

Course content and structure |
What enables some firms to continuously innovate and capture
market shares while others fail and go out of business? In this
course we will discuss the characteristics of innovative firms and
how successful firms manage to take on the challenges of digital
transformation. The main focus of the course is on innovation, but
we will view innovation in the context of digital transformation.
Throughout the course we will address how digital transformation
changes conditions for innovation and innovative firms. Using a
framework of standard innovation theories as our point of
departure, we will contrast standard innovation theory with the
opportunities and constraints of digital transformation. We will
discuss how digitalization challenges innovative firms regarding
products, processes and sources of profit.

Teaching methods |
Students’ learning experience will be enhanced
though integration of classroom activities, self study and web
based learning activities. The course is based on a blended
learning approach, in the sense that students are expected to
utilize the online resources for preparation, hand-in and to
receive feedback. Preparation to each class is necessary to enhance
the learning experience and participate in class discussions and
group work on home assignments. Preparation will be a combination
of readings, video lectures and cases.
The purpose of the preparation for each class is to introduce
students to each topic. The purpose of the classes is to go deeper
into each topic, link theory with practical examples, analyze and
discuss. The classes consist of lectures, exercises and case based
teaching. Teachers will elaborate on the topic and provide
examples, exercises and cases to facilitate classroom discussion
and help students integrate theory and real life examples.
For each class students are expected to prepare by reading,
watching video lecturers and cases, and complete a multiple‐choice
test. During class students will have time to embark on group-based
assignments, and following class students have the opportunity to
receive feedback by handing in these group‐based
assignments. |
