Course content and structure

This course will explore the role firms play in the development of a civil society. We will begin by examining the historical context of firms as agents of social and community development as well as their interaction with governments. We will then move to examine the contemporary environment with particular emphasis on differences across cultural and political lines. As part of this course students will learn about various frameworks and tools which firms use to develop, assess, and communication about their social and environmental impacts. We complete our study with a look to toward the future and a focus on business innovation as a path for achieveing the both
economic growth and the sustainable development goals.

Teaching methods
This class will be a combination of short lecture and case discussion.
Students will need to prepare a case for evey class and will be expected to participate in the case discussion.
Feedback during the teaching period
The feedback activity will be centered on the final assessment projects. Students will present their proposals and receive feedback.

All Home Project Assignments/mini projects are based upon a research question (problem formulation) formulated by the students individually, and must be handed in to the course instructor for his/her approval no later than 12 July 2018. The instructor must approve the research question (problem formulation) no later than 17 June 2018. The approval is a feedback to the student about the instructor's assessment of the problem's relevance and the possibilities of producing a good report.

Preliminary Assignment: To help students get maximum value from ISUP courses, instructors provide a reading or a small number of readings or video clips to be read or viewed before the start of classes with a related task scheduled for class 1 in order to 'jump-start' the learning process.
