Course content and structure

Content: The primary purpose is to enhance your English language proficiency  for professional purposes through translation, not to make you better translators as such. Your levels of competence may be different, which will be taken into account during the course. Thus the focus will be on your needs, to be detected by your teacher. You will be challenged on words and vocabulary, on formulation of sentences, including your more or less intuitive use of grammar, and on relevance in view of text receivers. Our joint efforts will be translation and sourcing support on the internet, but not translation strategy as a discipline. The ultimate philosophy of the course is that skills of English will make your professional communication more effective and support your professional prestige.

Structure: The start will be various exercises in translation and fault localization, corresponding to proofreading and upgrading of texts, partly for your teacher to judge your requirements, partly for you to ask questions online, and partly to find out if online quizzes and peer grading in groups may be an efficient element for us in enhancement of your English through translation.

Following the initial exercises, you will hand in, online,  written translations and answers to related questions, to be commented on online to you individually and/or jointly, whichever seems most appropriate.Through the questions related to every translation text, you will be trained in  awareness of pitfalls and in how to solve them in the simplest possible ways.

Teaching methods
After the initial online exercises the course will be online assignments. You will forward your translations and answers online, to which your teacher will reply online with comments and suggestions. Now you will be expected to revise your translations and answers, and to send the results to your teacher, who will mark those online. This process will take two weeks, and be repeated consecutively throughout the term.
