The goal of this course is to survey the principles of management (planning, organizing, leading, and controlling) as well as the underlying behavioral theories concerning people in the work/organizational environment (individual needs, group behavior, leadership styles and team dynamics). Class discussions will be based on assigned readings and assigned chapter materials including discussion questions, experiential exercises, ethical dilemmas, and case studies. As such, it is essential that the assignment be completed before each class. Classroom sessions will be used to review the assigned reading, present new information, pose questions, focus students on the issues being studied, discuss assigned chapter materials, and/or analyze assigned cases; in short, classroom sessions will be used to develop a foundation and awareness of the process called management. Emphasis will be placed on the practice of management in medium and large size domestic business enterprises. Specialty sections of the text will be utilized via lecture, videos, and small group activities to give students an opportunity to think about and discuss ethical, global, and small business/entrepreneurial/nonprofit organizations.
