Course content and structure

CROSS-DISCIPLINARY TEAMWORK: methods for coordinating and managing cross-disciplinary design processes based on anthropology, organisational theory.

DESIGN-ORIENTED USER STUDIES: Introducing different methods, approaches and tools to user studies including user methods and user integration, anthropology, co-design etc. User-oriented design, design research and service design will be introduced. The students will engage and communicate with different actors such as users: identified core needs and issues illustrated in the format of infographics. Through analysing, students develop a conscious approach to their own design process and the users they design for.

COLLABORATIVE DESIGN PROCESSES: Theory reviewing examples of cross-disciplinary collaboration in design processes will be included and examples reviewed and discussed. Groups will be divided according to the specific branch profiles of the design and architecture students.

Knowledge of perspectives in design research; design roles, design methods and processes. Seeing design as a process, perspectives are related to questions about tradition and the role of the architect/designer in their future practice. Knowledge of innovation and design processes are introduced and how they can be enriched and challenged. Theories and models will be applied to understand design and innovation process and how to analyse these. Subjects such as value, sustainability, circular economics, aesthetics, consumption habits and art will be integrated from various design-oriented, humanistic and social scientific approaches.

The Students will apply theoretical models of innovation and design processes to the team's own process, discuss strengths and weaknesses, and evaluate the result.

During this course, the students analyse the collaborative design process itself, collaborating in groups investigating how the design process is organised, phases and the basis for decisionmaking. They will be reflecting on individual versus collaborative processes as well as artistic versus business considerations.

Description of the teaching methods
Knowledge, theory and methods will be provided through seminars, lectures, studio teaching, workshops, group work and research activity. The students will be working in cross-disciplinary teams, collaborating throughout the semester. Strong emphasis is placed in blending understanding from business studies, organisation studies and the humanities. The students will reflect through reports, academic analysis, concept development and prototyping.

This course will tentatively be organized around the following topics:
• Cross-disciplinary teamwork
• Innovation and design processes
• Design-oriented user studies
• Design research and service design
