Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The second semester of Area Studies in French is built on two dimensions: Content and Language

The content dimension builds upon knowledge and understanding acquired during the first semester and focuses on markets, institutions and the interplay between globalization and local/specific francophone contexts.

The topics, concepts and perspectives raised during the course will help further develop the students cultural sensitivity and ability to understand and analyze present day values, practices and developments specific to the francophone space.

Topics dealt with during the course include: Economic and political integration, trade, the relationship between economic actors and institutions, political and socioeconomic reforms and associated cultural manifestations – all in the context of globalization. The course introduces a comparative perspective and successive backward views in history to comprehend present taken-for-granted values, views and practices t in the world’s French-speaking countries /regions /communities.

The language dimension is aimed at improving the students’ grammar skills, pronunciation and fluency as well as their listening and comprehension skills. Emphasis will also be placed on learning and exercising phrases needed in order to make presentations and participate in class discussions.

Integration

Building on the historical, geographical, political and cultural introduction to the “Francophone Space” of the first semester, the course seeks to give flesh to notions and debates that the student will have met in Globalization studies through examples from the world’s French-speaking countries/regions/communities.

Description of the teaching methods
All teaching and reading will be in French. The course aims at integrating content and language learning so that the foreign language is used to acquire content combined with language instruction. A combination of lectures, class discussions and student presentations will develop students’ knowledge and ability to analyze and explain current cultural, economic and social processes in the francophone space. The course takes a blended approach to learning, integrating online and face-to-face activities.
Feedback during the teaching period
The principal way for students to receive feedback on their readings and work for this course (Content and Language dimensions) is through active participation in classes. Classes will incorporate regular tests and interactive exercises (MCTs, problem solving, student presentations) as well as short written assignments allowing students to measure their learning progress continuously and prepare for their final exam. Students are therefore expected to attend all classes and to come prepared and ready to participate actively. Students are further offered the opportunity for individual feedback based on 2 voluntary 3 pages written home assignments.
