The Research Project (or Second Year Project) offers students the opportunity to integrate and develop their academic skills for analysing issues related to international business in Asia, and to make informed and reasoned methodological and theoretical choices to this aim.


The research project should bring together theoretical insights from the courses 'Introduction to International Business', 'Asian Business Systems' and 'Microeconomics', as well as research design and methods from 'Research Methods I' and 'Research Methods II'. 


The Second Year Project builds explicitly upon the Research Proposal, which student groups developed in the course Research Methods I during their first year in the IBA Programme. This Research Proposal serves as direct input into the Second Year Project. This implies that student groups formed during Research Methods I should also continue to collaborate and register in Digital Exam as a group for their Second Year Research Project. Where this is not possible, new groups can form and register correspondingly. Similarly, where deemed appropriate or required, student groups can develop a new research proposal for their Project.


As the first major group project that the students encounter through their BA studies, the research project is a key step towards the bachelor project. It necessitates teamwork, coordination, and planning. Building upon the existing Research Proposal, students have a chance to deepen the theoretical reflections, extend and update the corresponding literature review, and focus on the actual implementation of the proposed research design.

Description of the teaching methods
After an introductory lecture, the course happens entirely online and consists of two virtual contact moments with tailored exercises, an online discussion forum and an online research project conference.

An introductory lecture at the end of the 3rd semester (the preceding semester) walks the students through the research project, its requirements and the different modules that will help them work towards these throughout the semester.

Briefly thereafter, groups (already formed during 'Research Method I') are allocated a supervisor in line with the relevant research or professional expertise and have a first meeting before the end of 3rd semester. At this meeting, student groups are expected to work towards 1) a written point-by-point response to feedback and comments received from examiners on their original research proposal at the examination in the course Research Methods I, and 2) submit a revised research proposal, which takes relevant corresponding comments/feedback into consideration.

Students receive group-specific feedback on their ongoing research project work from their supervisor through video link meetings and by email. On top of that, online exercises for the entire class involving peer feedback guide the students in terms of time management as well as the academic requirements of their research project.
Feedback during the teaching period
It is important to underline that the Second Year Project starts from feedback the students received on their research proposal during the course Research Methods I in Semester 2. It facilitates the transfer of comments students received at their past examination on the research proposal into the supervision process of the actual Research Project.
Throughout the project process, each student group receives face-to-face feedback from their supervisor using video-link. In addition, the course coordinator will be available for general or professional advice. Through an online student conference and intermediary exercises, students further receive feedback from peers as well as the course coordinator and supervisors.

Supervision hours are offered in connection with the course during the semester and cannot be automatically transferred to the re-take period.
