Course content, structure and pedagogical approach | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Modern businesses depend on IT for almost all aspects of their operation. Systems analysis and design aims to identify new or modify existing IT business needs and solutions. It is a complex undertaking that requires both IT and business knowledge and skills. This course provides students with a business background with the concepts, knowledge and skills required to analyse and design information systems. It concentrates on the early systems development activities and outcomes, i.e., needs analysis and requirements specification as well as alternative choices for analysis and design processes, e.g., agile and waterfall. The course does not advocate a specific approach to systems analysis and design but introduces different processes, techniques, and notations suitable for various situations and context. Thus, an important goal of the course is to enable the students to make informed choices when planning, managing, and executing a systems analysis and design project. |

Description of the teaching methods | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The course is taught as a combination of
face-to-face lectures and exercises. The students complete a group
project during the semester.
The lectures introduce concepts, techniques, and tools, based on the textbook and supplementary material. Students are expected to have worked through the readings prior to the lectures. The exercises allow students to deepen their understanding of the content of the lectures, and to develop their skills in applying the concepts, techniques, and tools to practical problems. The exercises also provide opportunities to discuss and work on the semester project. The students complete a systems analysis project in groups during the semester. In the project, the students plan, execute, and document a systems analysis and design process. |

Feedback will be provided in the following ways:
• Question and answer sessions during the lectures • Feedback to their work with problems, and the semester project during exercises • Workshops during the semester, where the groups present intermediary results of their semester project. |
