In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance, see also the rules about examination forms in the programme regulations.

Students are encouraged to write in groups, because group work produces on average better quality projects and allows for deeper engagement. The project must lie within the scope of the BSc Service Management program irrespective of the concentrations. Groups can be formed across the three concentrations. If students despite of this want to write on their own, the size of a single person project is max. 40 Standard pages.

The student’s spelling and writing skills are taken into consideration in the overall assessment of the examination performance, but the academic content is given the highest weight.

(1) If the group has submitted a project, and a group member didn’t attend at the time of the oral exam, the re-exam is conducted on the basis of the group project that has already been handed in. However, a copy of the project for the ordinary exam MUST be handed in for the re-exam within a specified time. There is no access to extra supervision.

(2) If a group member does not pass the oral exam, the re-exam is as a rule conducted on the basis of a revision of the project that has already been handed in. The student will get a written feedback from the supervisor and requirements to be fulfilled in order to pass the exam. The student may, however, choose to hand in a new, individual project within a specified time. Still, there is no access to extra supervision. It must be stated on the front-page of the project, whether the project has been REVISED or has handed in a NEW PROJECT.

(3) If the group has not submitted a project, a new project must be handed in. The student have to find a supervisor and agree on a new problem formulation with the supervisor. There is one hour of extra supervision for the discussion of the subject and problem formulation. However, in extra-ordinary cases a minor number of extra supervision hours may be granted. Please contact the Bachelor coordinator regarding this.

PLEASE NOTE! As a rule students cannot claim supervision hours in connection with the retake/ reexam.
Description of the exam procedure

The final part of the study program is Bachelor Project combining various elements from the program. It comprises selection of a theme for the project (for example a select problem in a company), identification of a relevant research question and a research strategy for the project, literature discussion and designing a data collection (for example via text or through interviews), writing the analysis in clear language and drawing the conclusions of the analysis.


(Note that: students with a degree as ’serviceøkonom’ cannot make their bachelor project in the same company as used for their project in the serviceøkonom programme – except with special permission).

 

It the students responsibility to find a supervisor and students are suggest to start this process early. Students should consider who might be interested in their field of work. Supervisors can be lecturers teaching in the programme (or electives) and any researcher employed by CBS (Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors; external lecturers and PhD researchers). Finding a supervisor may take time.

 

In the finished project the students must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the academic areas as well as useful theories and methods learned throughout the programme which are relevant for the project. Moreover, the students must demonstrate the ability to structure clearly the bachelor project, both contextually and linguistically. Finally, the students linguistic abilities may be included in the evaluation of the project. More details will be described in the Project Guidelines published in the second quarter of the fall semester.

 

The assessment is based on a combined evaluation of the written work and the individual’s performance at the oral defense.

 

A group exam can only be handed-in by all group members together. If a group member is not able to participate in the group work, the group can decide to split. This requires a joint declaration and confirmation by the program coordinator.

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

A Project Guideline is published during the second quarter of the fall semester on CBS learn. It supplements the Program Regulations and serves as a teaching aid for the Bachelor Project. The Guideline provides detailed information about Project requirements and deadlines, as well as practical suggestions and advice regarding the Project experience and proper use of a Project Adviser (supervisor).

 

The initial period and crucial steps in the work process are supported by instructions, explanations, brief lectures and text via CBS Canvas. The blended learning material will be available in January 2019. For reflections and discussion about the process, the instructions and suggestions on CBS learn. The students are invited to an Introduction lecture and three workshops together with the project coordinator meet beginning early February 2019 [students, for example, get an overview of the process, the development of research questions, reflect upon the research strategy and learn how to engage with the supervisor].

Description of the teaching methods
Introduction and project supervision

The project group itself is responsible for contacting the project supervisor, producing a good thesis, and for using the supervisor as constructively as possible. The supervisor is available in order to help the group with its research issue (including the initial formulation) as well as the development of an appropriate research methodology. The supervisor, furthermore, functions as primary examiner at the oral defense.

The initial period and crucial steps in the work process are supported by instructions, explanations, brief lectures and text via CBS learn. For reflections and discussion about the process, the instructions and suggestions students and the project coordinator meet in three workshops.
Feedback during the teaching period
The supervisor will provide feedback on ideas and text during the meetings between the project group and the supervisor.
Two workshops for all students will give the opportunity to present ideas and to get feedback from academic faculty as well as from other project groups; a project conference will provide with the opportunity of presenting the full project and getting feedback on the project presentation from academic faculty and from other students.
