| Learning objectives |
Upon successful completion of this course,
students will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge,
skills, and competencies:
- Select and apply relevant theories, models, and methods to
analyze a defined research question.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the potentials and
limitations of the chosen theories, models, and methods.
- Formulate a well-defined research question within the program’s
subject area (i.e., maritime studies) to guide the final
project.
- Conduct a literature review and position the research within
the existing body of knowledge.
- Develop, critically assess and apply research methodologies,
including data collection and analysis.
- Present academically substantiated and documented
conclusions.
- Communicate research findings effectively.

| Course prerequisites |
| In order to participate in the oral defense of
the thesis, the student must have passed or be enrolled in all
other examinations in the program. |

Oral exam based on written product
In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product
must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The
grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and
the individual oral performance, see also the rules about
examination forms in the programme regulations. |

The retake exam shall be based on the same project as the ordinary
exam:
-If a student fails the oral exam (either individual or in a
group), they will receive feedback from the supervisor before
submitting a revised project for the retake exam.
The student has the option of either writing a new project or
improving the existing one, if feasible.
The student may receive an additional 2 hours of supervision when
taking the final project retake exam. This is only available if the
student has used all of the supervision hours allotted for the
ordinary exam and the student has made one attempt at the ordinary
exam.
The retake exam will be held in August/September. In the event of
withdrawal or failure to attend the ordinary exam, students will
automatically be registered for the retake exam. |
Description of the exam
procedure
The student begins the exam with a presentation and reflection
on the project (approximately 5-10 minutes). The remainder of the
exam time is spent in dialog between the supervisor/examiner, the
external examiner, and the
student.

| Course content, structure and pedagogical
approach |
|
The Final Project begins with a workshop to review the project
requirements and provide guidance on the project work. The work
plan and method for the project work is determined by the
student(s). The student(s) prepare(s) a plan for identifying,
substantiating and analyzing a complex issue in the subject area of
this course (i.e., maritime studies). A specific problem within
this subject area will be formulated. The student(s) will be
assigned a supervisor who will provide guidance throughout the
process. The supervisor also serves as the examiner. Additional
workshops are provided to help the student strengthen the various
project-related areas.
The student may receive an additional 2 hours of supervision when
taking the final project retake exam. This is only available if the
student has used all of the supervision hours allotted for the
ordinary exam and the student has made one attempt at the ordinary
exam.
The purpose of the Final Project is to provide students with an
opportunity to focus on solving a problem in the subject area of
the course, to which the scientific perspectives, theories, models
and methods acquired by the student can be applied.
The aim of the Final Project is to provide students with an
overview of the theories, models and methods of the program, to
demonstrate the ability to apply them and to reflect on their
potential and limitations. In addition, it is designed to train
students to work independently on a complex, academically relevant
problem. Finally, the goal is for students to receive training in
communicating a complex issue in the area of the course, method,
analysis, and conclusion, both in written and oral
communication.

A combination of on-campus and online teaching.

workshops on methodology and approaches as well as individual/group

All individuals/ groups will have 12 hours of
supervision.
Regular individual / group supervision during course.
This includes the time spent on preparation, communication and
administration by the supervisor.
Supervision must be held within the ordinary deadline for
submission.
