Description of the exam procedure

Every project needs to have a project agreement that includes a project description as well as an approved Digital Business supervisor. The supervisor will act as examiner on the project.

The examination is an individual, oral exam based on a written group project. 20 minutes are allocated to each student. This includes deliberations between examiner and external examiner as well as feedback and change over. The exam typically begins with a short presentation by the student (3-5 minutes). The student can bring any kind of relevant material to the exam, but cannot read aloud from a manuscript.

The project agreement must state:

-   Name and email of a supervisor who has explicitly agreed to supervise the students

-   Specific (empirical or theoretical) area and/or phenomenon of the proposed research

-   Motivation for choosing the area/field, e.g. grounded in literature

-   Research question or research agenda

-   An overview of the methods that are deemed appropriate to answer the specific research question

If the final project departs significantly from the description in the original project agreement (e.g. domain, theory, approach, etc.), the reasons for this must be accounted for in a short paragraph (5-10 lines) in the project report.

The project agreement must always be approved by the acting project coordinator who acts on behalf of the study board. Make sure to contact the supervisor/s personally (and early in the process) and make sure that you have an explicit acceptance before submitting the project agreement. It is highly advisable that students plan all supervision meetings early in the contact with the supervisor, due to time constraints.

The project must be handed in with the official CBS front matter.

Course content, structure and pedagogical approach

The overall purpose of the Digital Business Project is to work with a problem chosen by the student group, which falls under the general objective of the program and provides the student with a basis for progress towards their thesis work.

The integrated project is a group project where students self-select a problem, challenge, or opportunity in the landscape of digital business. Both digital technology perspectives and either a business-, organizational- or law/policy perspective must be integrated in the project. A specified technology perspective is required, and the students must relate the technology to challenges and opportunities in relation to either business- or law/policy perspectives. In the course of the project, the students should articulate a relevant research question or outline a research agenda, engage in practical or empirical work (e.g., the construction of digital artefacts or data collection), and present results and implications of their work. Students must demonstrate proficiency in both technology- and business/organizational or law/policy concepts and terminology. The students must also demonstrate that they are able to communicate relevant results and insights from the project in a coherent and convincing manner.

The project provides an opportunity to prepare for the master’s thesis by retrieving relevant information and working towards the identification of the thesis subject or “pilot” approaches intended to be used more extensively in the master’s thesis.
