Course Content

Aim of the course
The course ‘Fundamentals of Information Systems’ is divided into two modules. Module 1 is taught in the first and second quarter. The second module is taught in the third quarter. The two modules constitute a foundation course that provides the necessary understanding of the definitions, concepts, and tools used in the IS field. Module 1 will focus on understanding and defining the notion of Information Systems, their relationship with business activities, and the technologies that provide the foundation for information systems. Further, the first module will gradually lead into more development and design-oriented readings in the second module.

Module 1 provides an introduction to information systems by examining what is an IS, what are the different types, and how do businesses use them. In addition, the module will examine the basic technologies which provide the technical foundation for information systems.

The workshops which run parallel to the lectures will be used to reinforce an understanding of areas covered in the lectures, provide students with skills of critical reflection and problem-solving, and prepare for the examination. Exercises, case studies and student presentations will be used for enhancing students’ understanding of the lecture material.

Teaching Methods
Lectures and workshops.

Course readings
Students are required to read the assigned readings before each session. Any student who is not prepared to spend the required study time on the course can expect to fall behind quickly and perform poorly at the exam.
