Learning Objectives

At the end of the course the students should be able to:

Individually prepare and present a short oral presentation in (basic) Chinese/Japanese on a given topic on China/Japan with the use of power point slides of a high quality

Discuss the concepts of form, content, and evaluation of oral presentations

Show a general outline of history, religion, geography, culture and contemporary society of both China and Japan.

Place major events in Japan and China according to a timeline and compare central aspects of the two countries.

Structure and discuss the curriculum in relation to a given topic
-
Find relevant current news from China and Japan and relate it to its historical and cultural context

Students are to hand in a powerpoint presentation, max 10 slides, prior to the exam. The students are to present this power point presentation at the exam.
Topics are given to the students and will be uploaded on Learn. Please see exam plan on e-campus for dates. |

Course Content
|
The lectures in the fall term will give the students a general outline of the historical, religious and cultural heritages of Japan and China, whereas the topics taught during the spring term will cover the main social, cultural and political aspects of contemporary China and Japan, including current news taken from the media. Theory of form, content, and evaluation of oral presentations will be part of the teachings in order to improve students’ presentation skills. The use of Power Point presentation software will be trained in depth, including the use of illustrations and layout. Integrated parts of the course are also the training of study skills such as note taking, feed back, evaluation, use of Chinese/Japanese software, internet search engines, study techniques, group work etc. The lectures will be in English, whereas the students’ presentations will be in both in English and Chinese/Japanese.

Teaching Methods
|

The students are taught in plenum sessions for both languages together or divided in classes according to language. Group work and student presentations are integrated parts of the teaching. Part of the teaching will take place in pc rooms.
