Learning Objectives
|
Upon completion of the course students must be able to:
-
Provide an overview of the scope of supply chain planning and control
-
Structure supply chain planning and control into its major building blocks
-
Demonstrate the knowledge of the concepts used in supply chain planning
-
Master tools and methodologies for solving real life problems in supply chain planning problems
-
Analyze and evaluate resulting decisions and evaluate possible enhancements
|
Prerequisite
|
To follow the course with proficiency it is necessary to have basic knowledge of linear programming and statistics. It is strongly suggested to get acquainted with linear programming modeling and basic statistic distributions (in particular the normal distribution and its inverse) before to start attending classes. The course will require additional effort to those students that lack in basic mathematical knowledge.

Course Content
|
Aim of the course The aim of the course is to develop students’ competences in supply chain planning and control related to the areas of network design, transportation and inventory management.
Upon completion of the course students must be able to: provide an overview of the scope of supply chain planning and control structure supply chain planning and control into its major building blocks demonstrate the knowledge of the concepts used in supply chain planning master tools and methodologies for solving real life problems in supply chain planning problems analyze and evaluate resulting decisions and evaluate possible enhancements
Contents Today’s supply chains are characterized by the presence of many different actors and processes which have to be coordinated in order to avoid excessive inventories, inefficient capacity utilization and poor customer service. The following areas of supply chain planning and control are crucial: network design; demand planning and supply planning; inventory management; distribution and transportation planning. |
Teaching Methods
|
Lectures in combination with exercises and cases. In the classroom setting the relevant supply chain planning and control tools are introduced and discussed. With the help of cases and exercises students get insight to apply the tools. The teaching method should assure students involvement and participation. This is achieved by the use of cases, exercises and in class assignments. Students are trained to understand the complexity of supply chain planning and control and propose solutions to real life problems. They are also offered the possibility to train their competences of working in study groups and provide oral presentations.
