Course content | |||||||||||||||||
The course begins by tracing the contours of the most important problems in the current economic, political and social crisis that both Spain and Europe are going through these years and discussing how the two crises are related. Secondly the course concentrates on the historical, cultural and identity-related factors that have contributed to giving Spain its particular position within the European space like, for example, the historical mixing of civilizations on Spanish soil, the power of the Catholic Church, the economical underdevelopment or the lack of democratic tradition. This constitutes the backdrop of a detailed discussion of the political, social and economical aspects of the Spanish integration into the European Community, firstly until the accession in 1986 and secondly from then and up to the crisis in 2008. The last part of the course will be dedicated to assessing the extent of the current crisis and its effects both in Spain and in Europe and discussing how the two crises are related. |
