Learning objectives
In order for the students to acquire the mark 12 they must demonstrate that they are:
  • Able to understand the fundamentals of demand and supply analysis
  • Able to discuss salient facts about the economy’s performance; measures of economic activity such as GDP, employment and inflation
  • Able to discuss the determinants of trends in economic growth and business cycle fluctuations
  • Able to discuss fiscal, monetary and international trade policies and their effect on domestic and foreign business cycles and growth

Content is similar to that covered in an undergraduate macroeconomics course in North America. The main topics include Introduction: What Is Economics?; The Key Principles of Economics; Exchange and Markets; Demand, Supply and Market Equilibrium; Measuring a Nation’s Production and Income; Unemployment and Inflation; The Economy at Full Employment; Why Do Economies Grow?; Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply; Fiscal Policy; Investment and Financial Markets; Money and the Banking System; The Federal Reserve and Monetary Policy; Modern Macroeconomics: From the Short Run to the Long Run; The Dynamics of Inflation and Unemployment; The World of International Finance.
