Learning objectives
In the written essay the students should:
  • demonstrate an overall understanding of the field of information systems and information system development
  • demonstrate an understanding of the 14 individual topics introduced in the course and their interrelationship
  • be able to explain the key concepts which define the field of information systems and information system development
  • be able to apply the key concepts which define the field of information systems in a business case, where information systems and/or information system development play a significant role

The examination consists of an individually written essay (max. 10 standard pages) in which the students will answer a (set of) question(s). In their answers the students will have to demonstrate their understanding of the broad spectrum of interrelated topics which the fields of information systems and information systems development cover. The students will have 14 days to write their essays and can use all available materials. 
Internal exam with 1 examiner.

The make up/re-take examination is the same as the ordinary exam.
Course content
The course provides a comprehensive introduction to the technology, development and management of business information systems. The course assumes no prior knowledge of IS or IT. The new concepts and terms are defined as clearly as possible, with comprehensive explanations. In this fast-moving area, the course covers both the crucial underpinnings of the subject as well as the most recent business and technology applications. The course covers the following subjects:
  1. Basic concepts – information and information systems
  2. Hardware and Software
  3. Networks, telecommunications and the Internet
  4. Enterprise and functional business information systems
  5. Acquiring and developing information systems
  6. Initiating systems development
  7. Information systems project management
  8. Systems analysis
  9. Systems design
  10. System build, implementation, maintenance
  11. Information systems strategy
  12. Information systems management
  13. Managing information security
  14. Ethical, legal and moral constraints on information systems
Teaching methods
The course will be taught as a set of 14 double lectures. The theoretical and conceptual contents will be supplemented with:

• international case studies from a wide variety of sectors
• self-assessment exercises, essay and discussion questions to engage the students and encourage critical thinking and reflection
• online supporting resources including web links, extra cases, and multiple-choice questions for reinforcement and revision

Use of e-learning:
The course will be taught face-to-face, but the students are encouraged to use the above described online resources
