Analyse examples of effective/ineffective coaching and/or mentoring and the impact it had on the performance of individuals, teams, and/or organizations.

Summarize and evaluate knowledge of the course and present it in a comprehensive course project.

Project/home assignment (15 A4 pages).
Course will include one mandatory feedback assignment which will be an oral presentation (Duration: 20 minutes) on a coaching/mentoring related issue. The class will be divided into small study groups of around 4-6 people for this assignment. Each group will be assigned a topic at the beginning of the course so that they may schedule meetings to discuss the same and prepare their presentation.

Course content
|
Coaching and Mentoring is vital to today's most successful organisations. Many of the top companies for leaders employ coaching and mentoring processes as tools for accelerating the performance of their employees and attaining competitive advantage through that talent. In this course, participants will learn about coaching and mentoring in relation to helping employees improve and maintain performance for maximum output. Students will learn about the differences between coaching and mentoring and identify which is useful and appropriate when interacting with employees. The course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to employ coaching and mentoring techniques based upon the alignment of individual, team and organisational needs and will include the following topics:
- Theory and practice of coaching and mentoring
- The role of mentors and coaches
- The skills involved in mentoring and coaching
- The objectives of coaching and mentoring
- Stages of coaching and mentoring relationships
- Power and influence in the coaching/mentoring relationship
- Cross-gender and cross-cultural issues in mentoring and coaching
- Design and Evaluation of the coaching/mentoring process
The course’s development of personal competences: The course is designed to equip participants with the basic knowledge and skills of coaching and mentoring. In the course, participants will learn to:
- Understand how coaching and mentoring programs support business objectives.
- Appreciate the various individual, group and organizational issues related to the practice of coaching and mentoring.
- Develop basic skills needed in coaching and mentoring.
- Develop a framework for executing and evaluating a coaching/ mentoring process.

Teaching methods
|
The course is designed to be highly interactive and experiential and will include Classroom Discussions, Case Analyses, Role Plays, Group Presentations by Course Participants and Practical Exercises. Pre-class preparation and reading and active participation in classroom discussions is expected and is important for the achievement of course objectives.
The class will be divided in two ways: 1. In pairs to practice coaching and mentoring skills where both members will take turns playing the two different roles in the coaching/mentoring relationship applying the learnings of the course as they move along. 2. In groups of 4-6 people for the purpose of group presentations of coaching/mentoring related issues as experienced in their role plays as well as illustrated in business cases.
