Learning objectives
After having completed the full year course the student should be able to:
  • Translate texts of the same level as curriculum from Japanese into English
  • Correctly read, write, and understand the characters from curriculum
  • Construct simple sentences applying the correct grammar and actively use vocabulary from curriculum
  • Engage in basic dialogue coping with straightforward questions related to everyday topics.
  • Pronounce without major errors (in regard to contracted sounds; double consonants; voiced consonants i.e. “s” vs. “z”; “t” vs. “d”; “k” vs. “g”)

Description of the exam procedure
Japanese Intro 1 Mid-term fall exam:
Mid-term fall exam consists of an individual 2-hours written test without any study aids graded by instructor as pass/fail. Curriculum corresponds to Genki 2 (rev. edition), chapters13-18.

It is only possible to take the exam in the Spring semester.
Description of the exam procedure
The end-of-course summer examis an individual, oral exam without study aids or preparation time. Curriculum corresponds to the entire Genki 2 (rev. edition) textbook material from spring semester. Duration is 20 minutes including deliberation according to the 7-point scale by examiner and external co-examiner.
Course content and structure
This course is part of the propaedeutic year at ASP

An intensive course that provides students with knowledge of the basic elements with regards to syntax, grammar, and colloquial speech. The course will help the student to build a basic vocabulary enabling him/her to communicate in basic everyday Japanese.

The course offers classes in various linguistic disciplines such as grammar, speaking, listening, writing, reading, and will give the student the best prerequisite to start on Year 1 at ASP.Teaching is based on textbooks as well as audio inputs corresponding to a beginners’ level.
Teaching methods
Teaching methods combine lectures and group work guided by cooperative learning principles that engage each student to a maximum extend.
The introductory course is a demanding full-time study. Active class participation and submission of a number of home assignments are expected. We encourage the students to form smaller study groups.
