Learning objectives
This course teaches students about various culture and identity theories. It demonstrates how these theories can be used with empirical knowledge, as well as applied in academic and professional contexts. Students should be able to apply knowledge and theories to cases.
Course prerequisites
No specific requirements. Knowledge about culture & identity theories could be advantage, but not necessary. Students are expected to come with knowledge & interest in a variety of subject areas e.g. policy, marketing, communication & intercultural communication, etc. This interest & knowledge will be relevant to discussion and application of culture & identity theories in praxis. Students are expected to participate in class & discussions, as well as contribute ideas for case studies.

Course content and structure

Content, structure & teaching: 10 sessions x 2 hours
 

  • Introduces students to various culture and identity theories, as well as discussions relevant to these themes
  • Moves from theory to application: students will be required to analyze how particular theories can be used in professional contexts and / or in their field of study. “How can these theories be applied within my particular field?” and “What new knowledge can theories provide to existing situations?” will be examined.
  • Uses case studies to demonstrate a practical application. Specific cases will examine how theories can be applied in everyday life. Students are expected to assist with selection of cases and /or fields, allowing them to gain specific insight into areas which interest them most.
  • Case seminars: various cases /situations are examined.
  • Perspective: What do theory & empirical material tell us about cases? How are theories & empirical material connected to everyday issues, topics and phenomenon?
  • Teaching methods: teacher presentations, student presentations & seminars
