At the exam the student should demonstrate:
- Fluency in reading a known text involving correct character
pronunciation, recognition and suitable pausing
- An understanding of the text through translation into
English
- Ability to grammatically analyze a sentence
- A skill to engage in dialogue i.e. comprehend questions and
respond in an intelligible, well-pronounced and appropriate
way
- Ability to understand and apply a variety of grammar patterns
learned so far

Description of the exam
procedure
The exam is based on the teaching material from the Fall
semester.
The exam consists of five parts:
- Reading aloud a text excerpt from syllabus
- Translation into English
- Syntactical analysis of a Japanese sentence (in English)
- Talking about the text excerpt in Japanese
- Engaging in a dialogue about topics related to
syllabus
Grading is based on an overall assessment of all five
disciplines.

| Course content and structure |
|
The focus of teaching is applied language use in order to enable
the student to communicate in elementary to lower intermediate
Japanese about general topics related to culture and
society. The course will provide a general introduction to
appropriate language and formality level governing social
interaction. We expand the range of vocabulary and kanji according
to syllabus. Teaching is based on textbooks as well as audio input,
and the student will practice through speaking, reading,
translation and writing exercises.

| Teaching methods |
| Teaching is student-centered with an emphasis on
group work, which will be guided by cooperative learning principles
that aim at engaging each student to a maximum extent. The
languages of instruction are a combination of Japanese to
continuously stimulate and develop the student’s spoken fluency and
listening comprehension, and English when discussing grammar and
translating texts. Active involvement in group discussions and
activities is expected of all participants. |
