At the exam the student should demonstrate a
solid understanding of a text of lower-intermediate complexity
through:
- Translation into English
- Grammatical sentence analysis
- Formulating his/her own ideas in simple writing, using
appropriate sentence connectors and accurate grammar patterns
- Presenting a written argument coherently

If the number of registered candidates for the make-up
examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most
appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office
will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take
examination will be held as an oral examination
instead.

Description of the exam
procedure
The exam based on a non-syllabus text.
Dictionaries (in the form of books and wordtanks) and grammar
handbooks are allowed.
The exam consists of the following parts:
1. Translation into English
2. Grammatical analysis of a sentence from the exam text
3. Essay in Japanese of min. 400 characters
Grading is based
on an overall assessment of all three
parts. |

| Course content and structure |
|
The focus of teaching is applied language use in order to enable
the student to communicate in lower intermediate Japanese about
general topics related to culture and society. We continue
to work with translation as a tool to ensure reading comprehension,
and continue to expand the range of vocabulary and kanji.
The course consists of three interrelated classes: 1) translation,
2) speaking and writing, 3) grammar.
Japanese 2 is a lower-intermediate language course that builds
upon the knowledge acquired from Japanese 1, while gradually
increasing the level of difficulty.

| Teaching methods |
Learning methods involve plenary sessions, group
work monitored by the instructor, and individual writing and
listening exercises. Teaching methods incorporate structures in
line with cooperative learning, which are designed to ensure equal
participation and simultaneous interaction. Active participation in
class discussion and activities is expected of all participants, so
students should come to class prepared to take part. We encourage
the students to form study groups.
Teaching is based on textbooks as well as audio input corresponding
to a lower intermediate level.
The languages of instruction are: Japanese to continuously
stimulate and develop the student’s spoken fluency and listening
comprehension, and English to talk about grammar and to translate
texts. |
