Learning objectives
After having completed Japanese Intro 1, the student should be able to:
  • Translate texts of the same level as the curriculum from Japanese into English.
  • Correctly read, write, and understand the characters from curriculum
  • Construct simple phrases about people and places applying the correct grammar and actively use vocabulary from curriculum.
  • Engage in basic dialogue coping with straightforward questions related to very familiar topics.
  • Pronounce without major errors (in regard to contracted sounds; double consonants; voiced consonants i.e. “s” vs. “z”; “t” vs. “d”; “k” vs. “g”).

If the number of registered candidates for the make-up examination/re-take examination warrants that it may most appropriately be held as an oral examination, the programme office will inform the students that the make-up examination/re-take examination will be held as an oral examination instead.
Description of the exam procedure
The written test consists of a number of tasks resembling the ones from text- and workbooks, i.e. word conjugation, kanji recognition and production, applied grammar, translation, composition writing etc. The test entails knowledge of vocabulary and grammar learned so far.

Description of the exam procedure
The end-of-course winter exam curriculum corresponds to the entire Genki 1 (rev. edidtion) textbook material from Fall semester.

The exam consists of 4 parts:
  1. Dictation using the characters studied during the semester
  2. Reading aloud and translating a text excerpt from the syllabus
  3. Questions on grammar
  4. Talking about a picture and conversing in Japanese.
The grade is based on an overall assessment of all 4 disciplines.
Course content and structure
This course is part of the propaedeutic year at ASP.

The intro course is an intensive course that provides students with knowledge of the basic elements with regard to syntax, grammar, and colloquial speech. The course will help the student to build a basic vocabulary and communicate in basic everyday Japanese.
 
The course offers classes in various linguistic disciplines such as grammar, speaking, listening, writing, and reading. It will give the student the best prerequisite to start on Year 1 at ASP.Teaching is based on the pedagogical textbook system “Genki 1” and “Genki 2” with text- and workbooks. Each textbook includes an audio cd enabling the student to practice listening exercises pertaining to each chapter at his/her own pace.
Teaching methods
Teaching methods combine lectures with group work guided by cooperative learning principles that engage each student to a maximum extend.
The introductory course is a demanding full-time study. Active class participation and submission of a number of home assignments are expected. We encourage the students to form smaller study groups.

This course is part of the propaedeutic year at ASP. Both Japanese Intro 1 & Japanese Intro 2 must be passed before admission to Year 1 at ASP.
