Learning objectives
In order to achieve the maximum grade the student should be able to:
  • Describe the different functions of IHRM and discuss the elements of employment relationship in an international context
  • List and describe central theories, concepts, and models of international human resource management
  • Link theoretical concepts of IHRM to practical situations and bring forward appropriate solutions and recommend methods of implementation
  • Analyse and describe specific cases of the cooperation and interaction between managers and HR professionals in enhancing performance of international organizations.
  • Analyse concrete problems within global people management and reflect on the consequences of applying chosen concepts, theories, methods, and models of the course
  • Find and select relevant literature to support argumentation supporting a solution to a given IHRM issue

Prerequisites for registering for the exam

Compulsory assignments (assessed approved/not approved)
The student will have to hand in a synopsis (1-2 pages) presenting the topic and problem formulation for the written report. The synopsis need to be handed in 6 weeks before the deadline for handing in the written report.

Examination form Oral exam based on written product

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.
Individual or group exam Group exam, max. 3 students in the group
Oral 30 min. individual examination based on a written report which can be written individually or in groups of up to 3 students. Only students having handed in the synopsis will be allowed to hand in the written report.
Size of written product Max. 10 pages
If the written report is written in a group each student's contribution to the report must be clearly specified. Max 8-10 pages per students. The written report can cover unfolding a practical or a theoretical problem. Electronic hand in via CBS E-learn.

Course content and structure
In relation to the study programme’s qualification profile, the course forms an introduction to international human resource management(IHRM) and explicitly focuses on: - Imparting knowledge about the contemporary day importance of HRM and the corporate view of the function - Enhancing skills in collecting and analysing data within the human resource management area, assessing practical problems and setting up and justifying possible solutions - Qualifying students to handle internally and externally oriented situations concerning the employees in an international organisation and identify possible solutions and implementation processes.
 
The course contains the following areas of study: - The employment relation (incl. equality and diversity issues) - IHRM strategy and planning - Sourcing human resources for global markets (planning, recruiting, selecting) - International Training, Development & Careers - Maintaining high performance in an international context (e.g. rewards, benefits, safety and health issues) - Dismissal, redundancy and outplacement - The cultural and organizational context of IHRM, IHRM in Cross-Border Mergers & Acquisitions, International Alliances and SMEs
Teaching methods
The subject will be taught in English. To enable the student to achieve the learning goals for the subject, the course is planned so that lectures present the students for knowledge concerning relevant theory supported by cases together with written and oral exercises.
