Learning objectives
On completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • identify and classify sentence constituents with respect to function and form
  • account for the structure of sentence constituents (phrases and clauses)
  • identify and account for the structure of sentences (simple, complex and coordinated sentences)
  • identify and briefly account for areas of grammar which typically cause problems for Danes (e.g. countability, tense and constituent order), and revise and improve a short text or text extract
  • identify and briefly account for the use of a grammatical category in a text (e.g. number, person, gender, case, tense, voice and aspect) and for concord and constituent order
  • define grammatical terms and use these appropriately
  • use grammatical information in works of reference in an appropriate manner
Course prerequisites
It is advisable that students have followed and passed the 1st semester course Text and Text Production. This course is part of the BA programme in English and Organisational Studies.

Course content and structure

Structure of English is a course in English grammar.

The aim of the course is both theoretical and practical. Students are thus expected to acquire both a theoretical knowledge of the grammar of the English language and practical skills within the field, cf. the description of the course in the programme curriculum.

Students should:

  • acquire a systematic knowledge of English grammar and thus a frame of reference which can be used as a point of departure in the other subjects in the programme, and which makes it possible for students to understand and use the grammatical information provided in common works of reference
  • strengthen their linguistic powers of observation
  • improve their ability to perform text revision on texts produced by others.
Teaching methods
All students in the 3rd semester are taught together as one class except in the workshop sessions, which are organised for each class separately.

The course consists of a combination of lectures, discussions, workshops, written assignments and exercises, produced individually or in groups, and other student activities.
