Course content and structure
Every business decision has financial implications. This course is specifically designed to take business students with limited background in finance to a detailed knowledge of the major corporate finance decisions. Furthermore, students will obtain the requisite tools to make good corporate finance decisions. In particular, this course examines the principles and topics of financial management. Topics include valuation, risk, financial analysis and planning, working capital management, cost of capital, capital structure, dividend policy, and capital budgeting.
Then the course begins by introducing students to the structure of finance, financial statements, and the analysis of those financial statements. The course then continues with the basics tools that will be utilized during the rest of the course, which include time value of money and the use of statistics to understand risk. At this point students will be required to complete a mandatory midterm assignment to ensure they understand the material to date. After students have an understanding of the above topics, this course will apply these tools to a number of corporate finance issues including: pricing risk and valuation of financial instruments, capital structure decisions, capital budgeting decisions, working capital management, and dividend policy.
The course includes a Preliminary Assignment and a Mandatory Mid-term Assignment. For the Preliminary Assignment students will be required to do a corporate governance analysis on a company they select and for the Mid-term Assignment students will be required to prepare a short company analysis in groups of two.
