The course is taught by Pablo Villanueva Holm-Nielsen, who is a Business Continuity expert and consultant for companies and NGO’s. Pablo is an economist and tele-communications engineer and holds a Master in Disaster Management.

Learning objectives
  • To understand the concepts of Business Continuity Management (BCM) and how to implement it in practice.
  • To be able to analyse the risk level and exposure of an organization as a basis for a Business Impact Assessment (BIA).
  • To identify the various parts of a Business Continuity Plan(BCP) for an organisation or business.
  • To combine tools for creating BIA and BCP and communicate the BCM strategy for other members of the organization.

In order to participate in the oral exam, the written product must be handed in before the oral exam; by the set deadline. The grade is based on an overall assessment of the written product and the individual oral performance.

The make-up/re-exam will be held as a 4 day home assignment. There is a strict maximum length of 10 pages.
Course content and structure
A disruptive event, for example in the form of a computer system breakdown, a flooding of manufacturing premises or a sudden cut-off from vital resources, can be extremely costly for businesses. Therefore, they must plan for the reconstruction of the functionality their organization. The aim of such planning is to minimize the recovery time before full functionality is re-instated.
The course provides the students with a theoretical basis for analysing and implementing a strategy for Business Continuity Management (BCM).  The students will become familiar with the process of creating a Business Impact Assessment (BIA) and a Business Continuity Plan (BCP). Strategies for implementation of the BCM process and the necessary related disciplines will be presented as well. The methods will follow international standards for analysis, planning and implementation.
Teaching methods
The course will be based on lectures and class discussion sessions. Reading will be given for each class and a case will be evaluated throughout the course. During the lectures it will be expected that the students will participate actively in the discussion. The students will work in parallel in a case of their own that will be the basis for the evaluation of the course.
