Course content and structure | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The course surveys the most fundamental topics
shaping the Latin American economies since they became part of the
western economic trade system. Students will acquire a
commanding knowledge of fudamental economic concepts, different
patterns of economic development in the 19th and 20th century, and
the characteristics of the Latin American markets as they entered
the globalized market place since the early 1990s as a result of
trade liberalization and privatization policies.
The course begins with a brief introduction to key macroeconomic concepts followed by an examination of the main theories which shapaed the development of the Latin American economies from Colonial times untile the end of the 20th century. This will include theories such as comparative advantage, impost substitution industrialization, and neoliberalism among others. |

Teaching methods | ||||||||||||||||||||||
The course uses lectures. There is also an emphasis on active class participation through debates after the instructor's lecture. All teaching and class participation is in English. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
